I. Detailed introduction of the textbook and the connotation of medical English (15 min.)

Medical English is a little bit different from college English. You will benefit a lot from the medical English textbook. As medical students, you should learn some medical words and some translati執(zhí)業(yè)獸醫(yī)on skills.

II. Lead in questions (10 min.)

1. Are you happy and healthy?

2. How to lead a happy and healthy life?

III. Background knowledge (5 min.)

WHO provides defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. In another word, health in human beings is the extent of an individual’s continuing physical, emotional, mental and social ability to cope with his environment.

IV. Analysis of the text (50 min.)

1. Health is determined mainly by us.

2. Language points.

3. Analysis of difficult sentences.

4. Translation skills in important sentences.

   Health means a lot in our life and we talk about it everyday. But many of us do not know how to keep healthy. We should learn something from our text. Health is everything. No health, no wealth, and no life.

Students get to know the full meaning of health, and they can express their views on health in English clearly. And some translation skills are introduced and proved to be helpful to their study.

1. about WHO  

WHO is the directing and coordinating authority forhealth within the United Nations system. It is responsible for providingleadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda,setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providingtechnical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends.

2.   Our greatest concern must always rest withdisadvantaged and vulnerable groups. These groups are often hidden, live inremote rural areas or shantytowns and have little political voice."

II. Analysis ofthe text

1. What doeshealth mean?

WHO defines health positively as a state ofcomplete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence ofdisease or infirmity.

Health, as is well-known, is definitelyimportant to one’s life and work. Without a good health, the immense wealthwill turn out to be noting.In fact, ninety-nine percent of us are born healthy,but few of us die that way.How to lead a healthy life concerns everyone andJane E. Brody will tell us in detail.

2. Words andsentences

 1) Less than 10% percent of thedifference in health between any two Americans is determined by the caredelivered b6y physicians.

Some people are prone to distrust strangers.

He is prone to colds, especially in winter.

Mother is prone to headaches.

   3). counter: prove that whatsomeone said was not true:reduce the bad effects of something, defend against

He countered my plan with one of his own.

I hit him and he quickly countered.

One way of countering these problems wouldbe to redistribute wealth among the poor.

4). herald: say publicly that sb. or sth. will be goodor important; be a sign of sth. that is going to  happen

She has been heralded as one of the country’s finest musicians.

A publicity campaign was launched to herald a newfilm.

The singing of the birds heralded the day.

5).make some\no difference: have animportant effect on

It won’t make any difference to you.

Your support will certainly make a difference in ourcause.

   It evidently made no difference  whether I was there to look after thingsor not.

6) activate: make sth. especially an electrical systemstart working; make a chemical action or natural process happen

The lock is activated by a magnetic key.

They had planted  secret agents in many countries whocould be activated whenever needed

7). instill: cause to enter drop by drop; teach sb. away of thinking or behaving over a long period of time

The nurse instilled medication into the patient’s infected eyes.

They instilled good manners into their children at an early age.

A good teacher can instill the desire to learn in young people.
